On April 19, 2013 the South Shore Curling Club held a Learn to Curl session where newcomers are trained on the basics of curling. View a slideshow from the LTC event below (or view the photos on Flickr if you’re on a mobile phone or can’t view Flash).

The cost is $150 for the spring session — a $75 deposit by April 10 is required to guarantee a spot.

This is a great way for experienced curlers to keep going for a few more weeks and for newer curlers to try out a shorter season. We need at least 20 people to sign up. If you’re interested, contact us as soon as possible so we can add you to the spring roster!

The post Worcester Cup Video: SSCC vs. Ocean State appeared first on South Shore Curling Club.

Once again, the South Shore Curling Club sent three teams to the Worcester Cup at The Country Club in Brookline, MA. This year’s participants were:

South Shore I: Gerrit Blauvelt, Peter Brown, Kieran Chapman, Mary Beth Cordeiro

South Shore II: Chris Baker, Jim McSherry, Peter Gearon, Michelle Pierce

South Shore III: Andy Flynn, Rob Costa, Jonathan So, Rachel Butler

There were ups and downs for all three teams this past weekend. Friday had SSCC I losing both of its draws, SSCC II splitting their two draws, and SSCC III losing its game. Baker’s team lost a close one Saturday afternoon, and a loss to Broomstones II on Sunday morning kept them out of the finals.

On Saturday Team Flynn fought back versus Ocean State II to force a 9th end, where they took the win. A loss to Nashua (the eventual Cup winners) on Sunday morning kept them out of the Worcester Cup finals, and a loss to Merrimack placed them runners-up in the Schrewsbury.

Blauvelt’s team turned things around after an ugly Friday night and overcame the host TCC I team Saturday afternoon in an extra end. Sunday they beat Ocean State I in the D bracket to win the Wachusett.

Thanks again to everyone at TCC for their hard work organizing the Worcester Cup. We had a great time and will definitely be back next year!

2012 Worcester Cup finals

The Worcester Cup 5 & under bonspiel will be held this coming weekend (Mar 1–3, 2013) at The Country Club in Brookline, MA. South Shore Curling Club will be sending three teams:

At last year’s Worcester Cup all three teams made it to the finals, with Chris Baker’s team winning the Wachusett. Best of luck to all the teams this year!

But the best part about Saturday’s event were the people. The instructors were excited to teach us and the other people on the teams were just as excited I was to be there. Curling is known to be a friendly sport. Before the game, we shook the hands of our opponents and wished the “Good Curling”. Even when the other team does well, you don’t get mad. “When the other team knocks out a stone of yours, you compliment their throw. Even if in the back of your head you might get angry.”
